Notes on the score by THE U Director Billy Corben

The last time we worked with Honor Roll, they did an outstanding job blending a '90s West Coast hip hop sound with Jan Hammer/Giorgio Moroder-inspired synths for Cocaine Cowboys II: Hustlin' with The Godmother. For THE U, I wanted another pastiche score; this time remixing the Aaron Copland/John Williams-esque orchestral NFL Films sound with down and dirrrty Miami Bass -- just the way The 'Canes shook up the college football establishment and changed the soundtrack from the Notre Dame Fight Song to 2 Live Crew.
The collective of composers and producers at Honor Roll have been working their asses off to invent this new genre of music and they are doing a bang up job at it. I composed a song, "The Hurricanes Hymn," that inspired one of the primary traditional-sounding melodies for the score (a pop arrangement will serve as the end credits song) and the guys at Honor Roll have been working day and night for weeks, writing and orchestrating the over one hour of original music that will be featured in the final film. Their plan is to record a live orchestra and then run it through the ol' 808 to perfect the Miami '80s sound.
This week, we begin scoring sessions with the live players; a 14-piece orchestra, recorded in separate sections. The plan is to carry them all streaming live right here. Here's the schedule:
